The Birdland Big Band was created by Tommy Igoe in 2006 and has become the most popular weekly musical residency in New York City. The BBB is a world-class ensemble whose home base is one of New York City's top destinations for jazz, and whose lineup features the country's finest top-shelf talent, including musicians from every jazz/pop tour and Broadway show imaginable. The bands newest recording, Eleven, has been glowingly received, and Igoe will grace the cover of April’s Modern Drummer Magazine, in recognition of his stature.
In 2012 and 2013, the BBB will be launching their debut tour of the United States, taking the Birdland experience to performing arts centers across the country. The tour includes performances in venues up and down the East Coast, from Utica, New York to Miami, Florida.
But this is not your father's big band music. Under Igoe's direction, the Birdland Big Band is dedicated to performing unique music from all over the world. As Igoe boldly states, "The world doesn't need another good big band, it needs something unforgettable, something spectacular -- something to bring a brand-new audience to this incredible art form." And Igoe knows a few things about how BBB is different from the classic big band sounds of the 1940s and 50s -- his father, Sonny Igoe, was a drummer for Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. So it's with special confidence that Tommy Igoe builds upon that big band foundation and defines a new era for big band music with the Birdland ensemble.
About Tommy Igoe:
Tommy Igoe is one of the world's most prominent drummers and bandleaders. He began drumming at the age of 2 and has gone on to craft a unique and diverse career, traveling the world with Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat and Tears, Dave Grusin, Stanley Jordan, and the New York Voices among many others.
For the last six years, his Birdland Big Band has been the most popular weekly music event in New York City, maintaining its Friday residency at the iconic Birdland Jazz Club. In 1997, he created the drumset book for The Lion King on Broadway and also served as principal drummer and conductor.
Igoe is dedicated to world-class music education, writing some of the world's best-selling books and DVD's and is a globally in-demand clinician. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, he has taught drum classes at William Paterson College and at Rutgers University's main campus in New Brunswick, NJ.
Igoe recently moved to San Francisco where his new band, The Tommy Igoe Big Band, enjoys a weekly residency at the Rrazz Room. But Igoe also returns each month to New York City to keep the reins (and repertoire) on the Birdland Big Band firmly in check.
