There’s alot more to the music of modern Spain than flamenco. And this season, FLAMENCO FESTIVAL 2012 will bring to New York City some of the country's most creative and charismatics artists in a 3-night series entitled FLAMENCO & BEYOND on March 8, 10 and 11. Singer/dancer LA SHICA, rumba-rocker MUCHACHITO BOMBO INFIERNO and street-partiers CANTECA DE MACAO will introduce New Yorkers to a new generation of musicians that embrace flamenco's roots while re-inventing them, each in their own unique style, updating Spanish music for the 21st century.
LA SHICA and MUCHACHITO BOMBO INFIERNO will be making their North American debuts at Flamenco Festival 2012, while CANTECA DE MACAO will be following up their successful 2010 festival debut with a new presentation of music from their just-released CD Nuncas es Tarde.
All of the artists share common roots in Spanish music and the mestizaje, or mix of cultures, that originally gave birth to flamenco. Each, however, demonstrates a singular style that even the most adventurous of audiences can identify with. LA SHICA will debut her powerful mix of flamenco and copla at LE POISSON ROUGE on Thursday, March 8th at 8:00pm.
Two days later, MUCHACHITO BOMBO INFIERNO will debut his rumba-spiked rock in a multi-media show that features live paintings by artist SANTOS DE VERACRUZ at SOB´S on Saturday, March 10th at 12:00 midnight, while CANTECA DE MACAO will bring their musical carnival to LE POISSON ROUGE on Sunday March 11 at 9:00pm.
NOTE: Muchachito Bombo Infierno and Canteca de Macao perform at SXSW on March 17
FLAMENCO & BEYOND:
LA SHICA
LA SHICA (real name: Elsa Rovayo) is a bold and sensual performer who has succeeded in thoroughly seducing audiences and critics alike in Spain with her two CDs, “Trabajito de chinos” (2008) and “Supercop” (2010). Her riveting onstage presence merges dance and song, reflecting a multicultural and multi-generational mix of influences. La Shica’s approach to flamenco pulls from the depths of Spain’s deep copla tradition and restructures it within a modern Madrid soundscape, incorporating rock, funk, hiphop, and even bossa nova.
La Shica is the recipient of two Premios de la Música awards (Spain’s version of the Grammys) for “Best New Artist” and “Best New Songwriter” in 2011. New Yorkers will now have a chance to see her unique live show, one that fuses her passion for Spanish dance with an equally dramatic re-shaping of flamenco song.

MUCHACHITO BOMBO INFIERNO
If ever someone breathed new life into rumba, Spain’s irresistible dance rhythm, that someone is Jairo Perera, also known as MUCHACHITO. An edgy singer/songwriter with a knack for reinvention at every turn, Muchachito began his career in the small street cafes of his native Barcelona, singing and playing guitar and passing the hat for money. Today he has become an essential figure in contemporary Spanish music, known for his unique brand of rabble-rousing dance-driven rock.
With hit singles from albums such as Vamos que nos vamos/Let’s Go (2005), Visto lo visto/Saw What Happened (2007) and Idas y vueltas/Comings and Goings (2010), MUCHACHITO has become a veritable force of mature in Spanish music, where most of his performances include a large ensemble. For his American debut, Muchachito will return to the street-based one-man-band performances of his early years, where he developed his over-the-top showmanship. Accompanying him onstage will be Barcelona artist Santos de Veracruz, who will be creating live artwork onstage to accompany Muchachito’s music.

CANTECA DE MACAO
“Extreme fusion” is perhaps the best definition of the Madrid-based group CANTECA DE MACAO, an innovative band that has continued to surprise audiences during a career spanning ten years. Returning to New York after their 2010 debut, the band’s non-stop musical carnival embraces a wide array of influences: from Latin music to flamenco, reggae to jazz, American rock to Mediterranean folk. With a 9-member lineup that includes alternating male and female singers and a juggler, Canteca’s live shows represent mestizaje at its most freewheeling and fun.
CANTECA DE MACAO (their name is a play on the Spanish phrase for “cocoa butter”) has released three albums, Cachai (2005), Camino de la vida entera/A Way of Life (2007) and Agua pa’ la Tierra/ Water for the Earth (2009). Funded entirely by their loyal fanbase, their latest disc Nunca es tarde/Never Too Late is released this month.
