SVER
The Scandinavian group SVER plays instrumental folk music with the energy of a rock band and the elegance of a chamber group. Featuring Nordic and traditional fiddles, accordion, acoustic guitar and drums, SVER has been praised by Rootsworld as "sounding electric without electricity." The group two Norwegians, Olav Luksengård Mjelva (fiddle and hardanger fiddle) and Leif Ingvar Ranøien (accordion), and three musicians from Sweden: Anders Hall (fiddle and viola); Adam Johansson (guitar); and Jens Linell (percussion). PETROLOUKAS HALKIAS & VASILIS KOSTAS - The Soul of Epirus CD
On October 4th, the release of The Soul of Epirus marks the culmination of a lifelong exploration of the beauty inherent in the music of Epirus - its slow tempos, reflecting the isolated nature of this mountainous region close to Albania, and its haunting pentatonic scales, based on five notes instead of the more common seven-note scale. A collaboration between Berklee College of Music graduate and Global Messengers member Vasilis Kostason laouto and veteran clarinet master Petroloukas Halkias, the album delivers a rare opportunity to go beyond the usual clichés associated with Greek pop, illuminating the gorgeous melodies and superb musicianship to be found in Epirus' folk traditions of decades past, its ability to evoke both the inescapable sadness of the human condition and its life-affirming joy. STEPHANE WREMBEL - Django L'Impressionniste
As French-born guitarist and composer Stephane Wrembel's remarkable new Django L'Impressionniste CD reveals, there is more to Django Reinhardt than swing and the allure of what came to be called Gypsy Jazz. Putting the spotlight on 17 little-known solo pieces Reinhardt recorded between 1937 and 1950, Wrembel reveals a different side of Django. The album, which features liner notes by David Fricke, will be released on October 18 on CD, vinyl and digital. Wrembel will debut the CD in Lyon, France on October 19 at Lyon Opera House and in New York on November 21 at FIAF Florence Gould Hall. For Wrembel, the first interpreter who has performed all the solo pieces by Reinhardt and collected them here in one definitive masterwork, this is a portrait of the classical Reinhardt, the admirer of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy -- Django, the Gypsy impressionist. VAHAGNI "The Life & Death of a Great Matador" EP
Given his love of visual arts, and painting in particular, it is not a stretch to think of Los Angeles-based guitarist and composer Vahagni's new EP as a triptych. The title track and centerpiece, "The Life & Death of a Great Matador," is a composition he wrote for his late father and suggests both celebration and mourning. It is framed by the mysterious, meditative "Interlude"and the expansive "Sunday,"each a complete statement that can also be heard as prelude and postscript. The stunning video to the title track features flamenco dancer Manuel Gutiérrez in a fierce, intense performance in which he ends facing his fate in a bloodied bullfighter's jacket -- a stunning, wearable art piece by artist, writer, and fashion designer Domingo Zapata.
